In December 1863, the Bank of Otago Act was passed by the House of Representatives at Auckland. Shortly thereafter, a colonial headquarters was opened in Dunedin, with branches following at Invercargill (1864), Port Chalmers (1864), Balclutha (1864), Riverton (1865), and Oamaru (1866).
