Although no record exists of patterns being struck in 1823, there are impressions in silver of the so-called 1823 cent private restrike from mismatched dies.
Collecting Perspective
The cent restrikes from this year were made outside of the Mint circa 1860, by mismatching two dies. Dr. Judd noted that 12 pieces were restruck by dealer John W. Haseltine in 1878 and 1879. This may be the case, but information provided by Haseltine is notoriously unreliable. Probably more than 1,000 copper restrikes were made over a period of time
