About Weihaiwei

Weihaiwei was a leasehold territory of the United Kingdom from 1898 to 1930, situated on the Shandong peninsula and controlling the entrance to the Gulf of Zhili and the approaches to Beijing. Its capital was Port Edward, now Weihai. The leasehold began, under British pressure, after the Japanese withdrew from the area in 1898, following the First Sino-Japanese War, and after the Chinese had granted to Russia a similar leasehold for Port Arthur on the opposite side of the Gulf of Zhili. The British administration in Weihaiwei did not authorize the use of any specific currency, instead allowing Chinese issuers to circulate notes with Weihaiwei overprints. The Hong Kong dollar was also used. The Pick cross-references in this chapter are from the China chapter of the SCWPM. Krause does not recognize Weihaiwei as an independent entity. For earlier issues, see China.
